The "Wiener Philharmoniker" gold coin is minted from 999.9 pure gold (24 carats). The "Wiener Philharmoniker" has a face value in euros. The "Wiener Philharmoniker" gold coin was first minted on October 10, 1989, in two denominations. From the very beginning, this coin has been the most popular investment coin in Europe with the highest number of minted coins in circulation (more than 8.2 million pieces by 2004). According to the World Gold Council, the "Wiener Philharmoniker" was the world's best-selling coin in 1992, 1995, 1996 and 2000. "Wiener Philharmoniker" is minted by MÜNZE Österreich, a subsidiary of the Austrian National Bank.
Initially, 1 oz coins (first minting in 1989: 484,000 pieces) and 1/4 oz of pure gold (first minted in 1989: 586,000 pieces) were minted. This coin was issued in 1/10 oz of pure gold in 1991, and since 1994 the "Wiener Philharmoniker" has also been minted as 1/2 oz of pure gold. To mark the 20th anniversary of the "Wiener Philharmoniker" issue, 3 x 2009 coins were minted in 2009, for a total of 6,027 pieces. Each coin had 20 ounces of gold (622 grams) with a face value of € 2,000. (2009 specimens for Europe, 2009 specimens for USA and 2009 specimens for Japan). In 2004, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the coin, 15 "Wiener Philharmoniker" were minted with a total pure gold weight of 1,000 oz (31,103 kg). (Not for sale).
The back of the coin depicts (see large image above left) the organ in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Music Association, where the annual New Year's concerts take place. With the embossing "Republic of Austria" and a face value of € 4, this gold coin is legal tender. The reverse of the coin bears 1/25 ounce of gold and pure gold content of 999.9 / 1000. On the front of the coin are embossed musical instruments of the Vienna Philharmonic double bass, harp, four violins, oboe and French horn. Since 2008, the "Wiener Philharmoniker" has been minted from 99.9% pure silver (1oz). Further information about this product can be found on the website of MÜNZE Österreich AG.
