Australian gold coins began to be minted in 1986. During the first year, only 15,000 "PROOF" top quality specimens (1oz, 1 / 2oz, 1 / 4oz and 1 / 10oz) were produced. Until 1989, the most common motif on the coin is a cobble of pure gold, colloquially nugget. The one-coin coin (1 oz) depicts the famous "Welcome Stranger" - Nugget, found in 1869, which has a shape similar to the Australian continent.
Due to the low demand at the time, the Australian mints decided not to use the Nugget motif from 1990, but the kangaroo motif, which will change regularly each year. The original name "Australian Nugget", after which the investment coins received their name, remained until 2008. Since 2009, the official name for Australian coins is "Australian Kangaroo". In 1990 a coin weighing 1/20 ounce was minted, in 1991 a 1 kg limited edition collector's version. From 1991 to 2009, the Australian Nugget and Kangaroo were available in 2 ounces and 10-ounce coins, respectively. For more information on Australian coins, see the Perth Mint website.
