"American Buffalo" made of pure gold is first minted on June 22, 2006, by the United States Mint. With this coin, the US market is complemented by a coin made of pure 999.9 / 1000 (24 Carat) gold. Until then, only "American Eagle" with a purity of 916.16 / 1000 (22 Carats) were in circulation from gold coins.

"American Buffalo" is unique with its relatively strongly embossed relief, which makes the contours of the motif very impressive. The coin shows the face value, purity (9999 pure gold), country of issue (USA) and the slogan of the United States of America ("In God, we trust" and "E Pluribus Unum"). "American Buffalo" is sometimes called the "Indian's Head" in the United States, as the American's head is on the front of the coin, surrounded by the word "freedom" and the year of mintage. In the first two years (2006 and 2007), this coin was issued in only 1 troy ounce. In 2008, three smaller weights 1/2 oz, ¼ oz and 1 / 10oz were produced - only in the collector's edition. All "American Buffalo" coins are made by the West Point Mint in New York and are valid as legal tender in the United States (Denomination: $ 50 / $ 25 / $ 10 and $ 5).
