The coin was named Maple Leaf, a symbol of Canada. The first gold coin was issued in 1979 and is the second oldest modern investment coin in the world after the Krugerrand. Initially, the "Maple Leaf" was only 999/1000. Since 1982, the "Maple leaf" has been minted to a purity of 999.9 / 1000 and thus establishes today's common standard for investment coins. In the same year, ¼ a 1/10 troy ounce, 1986 ½ troy ounce and in 1993 1/20 troy ounce (all in gold) began to be minted. 1/15 of a troy ounce was minted only from 1994 to 1996. Since 1988, the "Maple leaf" has also been minted as a silver 1-ounce coin. Between 1988 and 1999, platinum "Maple leaf" was produced in all five mintings. (Newly, since 2009, the "Maple leaf" has been minted from 1 troy platinum). Between 2005-2007 and since 2009, these coins were also minted from palladium. Since the end of the 1990s, this coin has been the most widely issued gold coin according to current years. In a total load of all years, he lies behind Krugerrand in 2nd place. In 2007 and in the additional edition in 2008, the "Maple Leaf" is minted in a special edition in the hitherto unused purity of 999.99 / 1000, ie from 99.999% pure gold. In the same year, the Royal Canadian Mint minted a 100kg coin with a face value of CAD 1 million with a diameter of 50 cm and a thickness of 3 cm. (The gold content of the coin at the time was CAD 2 million). More detailed information about this product can be found on The Royal Canadian Mint website.
