Silver medal commemorating 150 years since the birth of Ferdinand Porsche – Proof, limited edition of 150 pieces
This exclusive silver medal celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ferdinand Porsche (1875–1951) – a visionary engineer and one of the most famous natives of Vratislavice nad Nisou in northern Bohemia. His name, born in what is today the Czech Republic, went on to become a global symbol of innovation and design excellence.
Throughout his remarkable career, Porsche contributed to the development of pioneering racing machines, the very first hybrid cars, and even military technology. Yet he achieved worldwide fame with his design of the "Volkswagen," better known as the Beetle – a car that, like its creator, became a true global phenomenon. The Porsche name remains just as revered today as it was 150 years ago, continuing to inspire collectors, car enthusiasts, and engineers around the world.
The obverse and reverse sides of the medal are the work of medallist Petr Patka, DiS. The obverse features a portrait of Ferdinand Porsche himself in a round frame. The depiction is based on a popular archival photograph in which Porsche is shown pondering a design challenge with a car steering wheel in hand. Despite his high position, he was renowned for personally engaging with problems and offering solutions – a rare quality admired by his contemporaries, when many factory owners remained distant from their workers. The portrait is completed with numbers and letters commemorating the anniversary of the designer's birth.
On the reverse, two of Porsche’s most iconic designs are presented: the legendary Porsche 911 standing before a mirror, reflected by the equally famous Volkswagen Type 1 – the Beetle. Completing the composition is the text “Vratislavice nad Nisou” and the date 3.9.1875 – marking the birthplace of Ferdinand Porsche in northern Bohemia, Czech Republic.
An interesting fact to conclude with… Did you know that at the age of just 15, young Ferdinand shocked those around him by installing a generator and an electric doorbell in his family home, which he had built himself? Today, his childhood home in Vratislavice nad Nisou is preserved as a museum dedicated to his life and work.
The medal is issued in a strictly limited edition of 150 pieces, each accompanied by a numbered certificate and presented in an elegant case – a true piece of Czech craftsmanship for discerning collectors.
