Stříbrná číslovaná desetiuncová medaile Československá parní trakce - Jedničkový čtyřkolák 434.1 proof s hologramem

The 434.1100 locomotive is a technical gem that represents a significant milestone in the history of Czechoslovak engineering.

Designed by the successor to the famous designer Gölsdorf, Ing. Johann Rihosek, it was created as a modern two-cylinder superheated steam engine and became a symbol of progress and craftsmanship of its time.

The 270 series locomotives were developed as a continuation of the successful 170 series design by the ingenious engineer Karel Gölsdorf. They were designed by Gölsdorf's successor, Johann Rihosek. This resulted in a two-cylinder twin locomotive (both steam engines are high-pressure) for superheated steam. Production for the then monarchy was started by the First Bohemian-Moravian Engineering Works in Prague-Libeň in 1917. Seven units were produced before the revolution. The most significant locomotive in Czechoslovak railway history is 270.300 with tender 156.2233, which was manufactured by Škoda Works in 1920 as its very first locomotive under the serial number "1".

The last Class 1 four-wheel locomotive in service was 434.1181, which was decommissioned in Ostrava in 1976. The important locomotive 434.1100 shown here was taken out of active service on July 30, 1968, and on March 4, 1970, it was handed over to the National Technical Museum as a valuable testimony of Czechoslovak engineering. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, the locomotive travelled as a non-operational machine to various exhibitions. As part of the preparations for the celebration of the arrival of the first train from Olomouc to Prague, an initiative was launched by Czech Railways (namely Jaromír Kozinka) to put this rare machine back into operation. Unfortunately, after the boiler's technical eligibility expired, the owner (the state/NTM) was no longer interested in keeping the four-wheeled locomotive in working order, and so we can once again see it as a dead exhibit in Lužná u Rakovníka.

The obverse and reverse sides of the medal are the work of academic sculptor Vladimír Oppl. The obverse side is dominated by the 434.1 Class 1 four-wheeled locomotive, which features a unique hologram with a semicircular driving wheel containing the year. The rim of the medal is framed with inscriptions.

The reverse side depicts a set of historical railway signals and symbols from the first half of the 20th century. The dominant motifs are a drive wheel, a mechanical single-arm semaphore signal, and a mechanical advance warning signal (the older one was square, the newer one was round). Another railway motif is a diamond-shaped shunting signal. These elements refer to the development of signalling and safety in railway transport.
